Resin built for dissolved iron

This fine-mesh cation softening resin, packaged one cubic foot to a UPS-friendly box, uses a smaller bead size than standard resin to give more surface area for exchange. That extra surface makes fine-mesh resin the preferred choice on well water carrying dissolved (ferrous) iron, because it holds and releases iron more effectively during softening and regeneration than coarse resin does.

Using it correctly

Fine-mesh resin pairs with a properly sized upper distributor screen to keep the smaller beads in the tank, so confirm your valve is set up for fine mesh before charging it. The one-cubic-foot box makes it easy to build or rebed a softener to the exact volume your tank calls for. How fine-mesh differs in service

Because the beads are smaller, fine-mesh resin presents more surface area per cubic foot, which improves both softening kinetics and its ability to hold iron. The trade-off is that it demands the correct upper distributor screen so the smaller beads are not carried out to service, and it can run at a slightly higher pressure drop, both easily accommodated when the system is set up for fine mesh from the start.

Regenerating iron-loaded resin

Iron gradually fouls any softening resin, so on iron-bearing water we recommend a resin cleaner used periodically alongside salt regeneration to keep the bed's capacity high.
