Jacobi AquaSorb CX-MCA is a catalytic activated carbon media, supplied here in a three-quarter cubic foot box. Catalytic carbon is a step beyond standard activated carbon: in addition to the adsorption that ordinary carbon provides, its surface is treated to enhance a catalytic activity that helps break down certain contaminants that plain carbon struggles with. That makes it the media of choice when the water problem goes past simple chlorine taste and into the more stubborn compounds that ordinary carbon cannot fully handle.

What It Is Built to Tackle

Catalytic carbon is commonly reached for when chloramine is present in a municipal supply, since chloramine is far more persistent than free chlorine and resists standard carbon. It is also used against certain nuisance compounds that produce odors and off tastes even after conventional treatment. If your water is chloraminated, or if a standard carbon filter has not fully cleared a lingering odor, stepping up to catalytic carbon frequently makes the difference. Like other coconut-based carbons in the AquaSorb line, it is hard and low in dust, so it holds up well to repeated backwashing.

How It Serves in a Tank

This media fills a backwashing filter tank equipped with a control valve, riser tube, and lower distributor, typically over a gravel support bed. The valve backwashes the carbon periodically to lift the bed, rinse away trapped particles, and keep the media open and active. The three-quarter box is a convenient size for filling a modest tank or refreshing an existing bed. When the tastes or odors it was controlling begin to return, that is the signal the carbon has done its work and is ready to be renewed.
