PFAS & “Forever Chemical” Removal Systems
PFAS — per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances — are a family of thousands of synthetic chemicals used for decades in non-stick cookware, stain- and water-repellent fabrics, firefighting foam, food packaging, and industrial processes. They are nicknamed “forever chemicals” because the carbon–fluorine bond that makes them so useful also makes them extraordinarily resistant to breaking down. Once PFAS reach groundwater and municipal supplies, they persist for years, and a growing body of research links long-term exposure to certain PFAS with health concerns. In 2024 the U.S. EPA finalized the first national, legally enforceable drinking-water limits for several PFAS compounds, including PFOA and PFOS — a clear signal that treating this contaminant at the point of use is no longer optional for households that want certainty about their water.
Why standard filters don’t stop PFAS
A basic sediment cartridge or a water softener will not remove PFAS. Softeners exchange hardness minerals; sediment filters catch particulates. PFAS are dissolved molecules, so they slip straight through both. Removing them reliably takes one of three proven technologies, and the right choice depends on your water and how much water you need to treat:
- Activated carbon (GAC and carbon block): High-quality granular and block carbon adsorbs many longer-chain PFAS effectively, especially PFOA and PFOS. Carbon is the workhorse of whole-house PFAS reduction because it treats every tap at a reasonable flow rate. Media must be sized correctly and replaced on schedule, because a saturated carbon bed stops protecting you.
- Reverse osmosis (RO): An RO membrane rejects the widest range of PFAS, including the shorter-chain compounds that carbon struggles with. RO is the gold standard for drinking and cooking water at a dedicated tap, and it also removes many other dissolved contaminants at the same time.
- Ion exchange (anion resin): Purpose-built PFAS resins target these negatively charged molecules and are often used as a polishing stage or where very low residuals are required.
Whole-house vs. point-of-use — which you need
If your goal is to protect drinking and cooking water, a point-of-use reverse-osmosis system under the kitchen sink is the most cost-effective and thorough option. If you also want to reduce PFAS in the water you bathe in and use throughout the home, a properly sized whole-house activated-carbon system is the better fit, often paired with an RO unit at the kitchen tap for the lowest possible residuals. The correct answer comes down to three numbers: your measured PFAS levels, your household’s peak flow rate, and how many fixtures you want protected.
Start with a test
Because PFAS are invisible, odorless, and tasteless, testing is the only way to know what you’re dealing with. Check your municipal Consumer Confidence Report, or use a certified laboratory PFAS test for well water. Knowing which compounds are present — and at what concentration — lets you match the media and system size to the job instead of guessing. Under-sizing a carbon bed is the most common and most expensive PFAS mistake: the system looks like it’s working long after the media has stopped adsorbing.
