Opis
Red Flint Gravel, 1/2" x 1/4", 50# bag is a coarse quartz support media used as the bottom underbedding layer in mineral tanks, filters, and softeners. Placed beneath the primary media, it stabilizes the bed, protects the distributor and lower basket, and promotes even flow during service and backwash.
- Screened grade: 1/2" x 1/4" coarse particle size
- Packaged as a 50 lb bag (approximately 22.7 kg)
- High-silica red flint quartz, naturally hard and durable
- Chemically inert and insoluble across a wide pH range
- Forms the base gravel layer supporting finer media and gravel above it
- Rounded, low-fines composition resists channeling and packing
This coarse grade is typically the lowest gravel layer in a graded underbed, keeping media off the tank floor and helping distribute water uniformly across the bed. It suits larger residential and commercial vessels where a heavier support layer is needed. For layered installations, pair it with a finer gravel above and consult your system's tank-size and media-volume chart to determine how many bags your vessel requires.
Red Flint Support Gravel
Red Flint gravel is a graded underbedding material used in water treatment tanks, supplied here in a bagged quantity for convenient handling. It is placed in the bottom of a mineral or filter tank beneath the working media, where it forms a stable base layer. The particular size grade of this gravel is chosen so it supports finer media above without passing through the tank's distributor screens.
The Job It Does
In a properly built media bed, support gravel serves two important purposes. First, it cradles and evenly distributes the media above it, preventing the bed from shifting or channeling. Second, and just as importantly, it keeps the finer working media from packing down around the lower distributor or being carried into the plumbing, which protects both your control valve and your treated-water flow. Even, well-supported flow through the tank is what makes filtration and softening perform as designed.
When and How It Is Used
Support gravel is typically added first when building or rebedding a tank, layered in before the primary media. It is a common need whenever you are loading a new tank, replacing spent media, or rebuilding a system that has developed flow or performance problems traced to a disturbed bed. Because it is inert, it does not wear out, so it is generally reused or refreshed only when a tank is opened up.
