Removing iron and sulphur together

Iron and hydrogen sulphide usually arrive together because they come from the same place: groundwater that has been in contact with rock, without oxygen, long enough to dissolve what it touched. Both are invisible in the water as it leaves the ground. Both become obvious the moment that water meets air.

That is the whole basis of treatment. Dissolved ferrous iron is clear; oxidised ferric iron is a rust particle you can filter. Dissolved hydrogen sulphide smells; oxidised sulphur is a solid you can filter. So the system oxidises first, then filters — and the filter media is chosen to do both jobs at once.

Why staining continues after a softener is fitted

A softener exchanges dissolved ions, and it will remove a modest amount of dissolved iron as a side effect. What it cannot do is handle iron that has already oxidised into particles before reaching the resin. Those particles coat the resin beads, progressively blinding them, until the softener stops softening as well.

This is why iron removal belongs upstream of softening rather than being asked of the softener itself. Fitting a softener to an iron-bearing supply without pre-treatment shortens resin life considerably and leaves the staining largely unresolved.

Water treatment considerations in this part of Alaska

Alaskan supplies present a combination that is unusual in the lower 48. Many communities draw from shallow groundwater or surface sources with low mineral content and low pH — water that is soft but aggressive, and that attacks copper plumbing rather than scaling it. Others draw from wells with high iron and sulphur. Treatment specified for one of those conditions does nothing for the other, which is why a water test matters more here than almost anywhere else.

Freeze protection is the second consideration. Equipment installed in an unheated space, a crawl space, or an outbuilding needs to be protected or drained seasonally. A media tank that freezes will crack, and a control head that freezes will not survive the thaw. Where a property is unoccupied through winter, a documented winterisation routine is worth more than any component upgrade.

Freight and lead time are the third. Ordering the correct part the first time is worth real effort when the alternative is a second shipment. Confirming model numbers, thread sizes and control types before ordering avoids the most expensive mistake available in a remote installation.
