North Carolina doesn't have one hardness number — it has a gradient that follows the geology from the Atlantic to the mountains. Move into the Piedmont and Appalachian interior and the water gets noticeably harder, commonly 6 to 10.5 gpg as groundwater picks up minerals from denser bedrock.
