Alabama's PFAS story starts on the Tennessee River

Few states carry as clear an industrial PFAS legacy as Alabama. For decades the 3M plant in Decatur was a major producer of PFOA and PFOS, discharging into the Tennessee River until the company phased those chemicals out in 2002. The Decatur corridor of Morgan and Lawrence counties is widely regarded as a Southeastern PFAS hotspot, and Alabama also hosts military sites where aqueous film-forming firefighting foam (AFFF) was historically used, adding a second category of potential release beyond the industrial plant itself.

The legacy has had real consequences downstream. 3M reached a settlement of roughly $35 million to help fund a new filtration facility for a Decatur-area utility, and the company acknowledged unlawful PFAS releases into the Tennessee River, according to reporting summarized by STEEP/URI and C&EN. The West Morgan-East Lawrence Water Authority, which draws directly from the river, is the system most closely associated with this contamination, and it invested heavily in advanced treatment to protect customers along the corridor. Because these compounds do not break down in nature, once they reach the river and the aquifers connected to it they can linger for years and travel far from the original outfall.

State rules and what they mean here

Alabama has not adopted its own enforceable PFAS drinking-water MCL as of early 2026, so utilities in the state operate under the federal numbers. State lawmakers did introduce PFAS legislation during the 2025 session, per the Rockefeller Institute, but no Alabama-specific limit is in force yet. The federal figures that govern Decatur and every other Alabama system come from the 2024 EPA rule: 4 parts per trillion for PFOA and for PFOS, and 10 ppt each for PFNA, PFHxS and GenX (HFPO-DA). Those are the thresholds your river-fed or well-fed supply must eventually meet.

Getting these chemicals out of Tennessee River water

The good news for Alabama homeowners is that the same class of technology the West Morgan-East Lawrence utility relies on scales down to a single house. Three approaches carry the load. Granular activated carbon (GAC) works by adsorbing PFAS onto a large carbon surface and is the natural fit for whole-house, point-of-entry duty on river or well water. Anion-exchange resin takes a different route, trading charged PFAS ions off the water through a compact media bed that is especially efficient on the long-chain compounds tied to legacy manufacturing. Reverse osmosis (RO) pushes water through a dense membrane that turns back PFAS along with a long list of other contaminants, making it the strongest choice right at the kitchen tap.

For a Decatur-corridor home with documented PFAS, a point-of-entry unit treats bathing, cooking and drinking water alike; adding an under-sink RO gives a second polishing barrier where it matters most.

Is your water affected?

Even away from the river, PFAS can appear near airports, military bases and industry, so testing is the only way to be certain. Ask your utility for its Consumer Confidence Report or its UCMR 5 sampling results, and if you draw from a private well - which no public program monitors for you - order a certified PFAS lab test. Our PFAS water filter removal guide walks through how to read those numbers.
