Viqua UV Water Treatment Systems: Advanced Sterilization for Safe, Clean Water

The Viqua collection features a comprehensive range of ultraviolet (UV) water sterilizers designed to provide effective microbial disinfection for residential, commercial, and light industrial water treatment applications. Known for their robust engineering, proven germicidal performance, and user-friendly operation, Viqua UV systems ensure safe drinking water by neutralizing bacteria, viruses, and other harmful pathogens without chemicals. This collection includes models tailored for various flow rates—from compact tap systems to high-capacity sterilizers—offering scalable solutions for diverse water treatment needs.

How Viqua UV Water Sterilizers Work

Viqua UV sterilizers employ ultraviolet light at a germicidal wavelength (typically 254 nm) to disrupt the DNA and RNA of microorganisms present in water, rendering them incapable of reproduction and infection. Water flows through a stainless steel or quartz chamber where it is exposed to UV light emitted by a high-intensity lamp. Unlike chemical disinfectants, UV treatment leaves no residual taste or odor and does not alter water chemistry.

UV Lamp: The core component emits UV-C light to inactivate pathogens.
Quartz Sleeve: Protects the lamp from water contact while allowing UV transmission.
Reactor Chamber: Designed for optimal UV exposure and laminar water flow.
Power Supply: Provides regulated electrical current for consistent lamp operation.

Viqua models such as the S5Q-PV operate at 6 gallons per minute (gpm), while the PRO20 delivers up to 20 gpm with a validated UV dose of 40 mJ/cm², meeting NSF performance standards. Smaller units like the S2Q-PA tap system treat 3 gpm, ideal for point-of-use applications. Larger systems like the VH410 and Arros series support flow rates up to 22 gpm for whole-house or light-commercial treatment.

How to Choose the Right Viqua UV System

Selecting an appropriate Viqua UV sterilizer depends on your water usage, flow rate, and treatment objectives. Consider these factors:

Flow Rate Requirements: Determine your peak water flow in gallons per minute. For example, the VH150 is rated for 5 gpm, suitable for small homes, while the Arros 22 accommodates flows up to 22 gpm for larger households or small businesses.
Water Quality and UV Dose: Assess water turbidity and microbial contamination. Systems like the PRO20 deliver a UV dose of 40 mJ/cm², ensuring effective disinfection for challenging water conditions.
Installation Location: Point-of-entry systems treat all incoming water, whereas point-of-use units like the S2Q-PA tap system can be installed at specific taps or appliances.
Certifications: Some Viqua models, such as the PRO20, are NSF certified, providing assurance of performance compliance.

Sizing and Compatibility of Viqua UV Systems

Proper sizing ensures maximum disinfection efficacy and system longevity. Viqua UV sterilizers are designed for compatibility with standard plumbing configurations and operate optimally within specified flow rates:

S2Q-PA Tap UV System: Ideal for 3 gpm flow, compact design fits under sinks or near drinking water taps.
VH Series (VH150, VH200, VH410): Cover flow rates from 5 to 18 gpm, suitable for whole-house applications with moderate to high water demand.
S5Q-PV: A 6 gpm system for residential or small commercial use, offering reliable UV sterilization.
PRO20: High-capacity model delivering up to 20 gpm flow with a high UV dose, NSF certified for residential and light commercial use.
Arros Series (ARROS-15, ARROS-22): Provide 15 and 22 gpm flows respectively, engineered for larger homes or small business water treatment.

When integrating Viqua systems, confirm compatibility with your existing plumbing and water pressure. Viqua units require clear water free of particulates that could shield microorganisms from UV exposure, so appropriate pre-filtration may be necessary.

Maintenance and Replacement for Viqua UV Systems

Maintaining optimal UV performance involves routine inspection and component replacement. Key maintenance tasks include:

UV Lamp Replacement: UV lamps typically have a service life of approximately 9,000 hours (about one year of continuous use). Replacement lamps for specific models are available, such as the VIQUA-ARROS-22-LAMP for the Arros 22 system.
Quartz Sleeve Cleaning: The quartz sleeve surrounding the lamp should be cleaned periodically to remove mineral deposits and biofilm that reduce UV transmission.
Power Supply Check: Ensure the power supply unit is functioning correctly. Viqua systems require stable electrical input; some components, like the Trojan power supplies (e.g., UV650716-006 for UVMAX-C systems), are compatible with certain Viqua models or used for upgrades.
System Inspection: Regularly verify water flow rates remain within rated specifications and check for leaks or damage to the reactor chamber.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q? How often should I replace the UV lamp in my Viqua system?
A: UV lamps generally require replacement every 9,000 hours of operation, which equates to roughly one year of continuous use. Timely replacement ensures consistent UV output and effective sterilization.

Q? Can Viqua UV systems remove chemical contaminants or sediments?
A: No, Viqua UV sterilizers are designed specifically to inactivate microorganisms. They do not remove chemicals, heavy metals, or particulate matter. Pre-filtration may be necessary to reduce turbidity and protect the UV lamp.

Q? Are Viqua UV systems certified for performance?
A: Yes, select models such as the PRO20 have NSF certification, verifying their capability to deliver validated UV doses for water disinfection. Always check individual product specifications for certification details.
