Filter Housings: Durable, Versatile Enclosures for Effective Water Filtration

Filter housings are essential components in water treatment systems, designed to securely encase water filter cartridges and ensure proper flow and filtration. This collection features a diverse range of filter housings, including Pentek Big Blue models, slimline options, clear and colored variants, as well as whole-house upflow and backwashing filter housings. These housings accommodate different filter sizes and types, offering flexibility and reliability for residential and commercial water filtration needs.

How Filter Housings Work

Filter housings serve as protective containers that hold water filter cartridges in place while directing water flow through the filter media. Water enters the housing, passes through the filter cartridge, and exits filtered and treated. The housing maintains a tight seal to prevent leaks and withstands varying water pressures. Some models include features like pressure relief valves to make cartridge replacement easier and internal bypass valves to maintain flow if the cartridge becomes clogged. Materials used in these housings, such as heavy-duty plastic or clear polycarbonate, provide durability and allow for visual inspection of the filter condition.

How to Choose the Right Filter Housing

Filter Size Compatibility: Match the housing size with your filter cartridge dimensions. Common sizes in this collection include 10-inch and 20-inch lengths, with diameters ranging from standard Big Blue (4.5 inches) to slimline 2.5-inch sump housings.
Connection Size: Ensure the inlet and outlet ports match your plumbing system. Options range from 3/8 inch up to 1 inch, including 3/4 inch fittings, with some housings featuring valve-in-head designs for easier system isolation during maintenance.
Material and Construction: Choose clear housings if you want to visually monitor filter condition without opening the unit. Colored housings like blue or white are also available, often made of UV-resistant materials for outdoor or whole-house applications.
Special Features: Consider housings with pressure relief valves for safer and simpler cartridge changes, or internal bypass valves that allow water to bypass the filter if clogged, preventing system shutdown.
Application Type: For whole-house filtration, upflow backwashing filter housings and larger diameter models accommodate media or carbon filters and provide higher flow rates and longer service life.

Sizing and Compatibility Tips

When selecting a filter housing, measure the cartridge length and diameter required by your filtration system or desired filter media. For example, Pentek Big Blue housings support 10-inch and 20-inch cartridges with a larger diameter for higher flow capacity. Slimline housings, typically 2.5 inches in diameter, fit smaller cartridges suited for point-of-use or specific sump filter systems.

Check the connection size carefully; common sizes in this collection include 3/8", 3/4", and 1" ports. Using properly sized connections ensures leak-free installation and optimal water flow. Valve-in-head housings simplify plumbing by integrating shut-off valves directly on the housing.

For whole-house systems, the upflow filter housings with bypass valves and backwashing capabilities allow for media regeneration and extended filter life, making them suitable for sediment, carbon, or specialty media filtration.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I use any filter cartridge with these housings?
Most housings in this collection are designed for standard cartridge sizes such as 10-inch or 20-inch filters, but it is important to verify that the cartridge diameter matches the housing's internal dimensions. Using cartridges not designed for the housing may result in leaks or improper filtration.

Q: What is the benefit of a pressure relief valve on a filter housing?
A pressure relief valve allows you to safely release built-up pressure inside the housing before opening it for cartridge replacement. This feature prevents water spray and makes maintenance easier and safer.

Q: How do valve-in-head housings improve system maintenance?
Valve-in-head housings include built-in shut-off valves that isolate the filter housing from water supply without shutting off the entire water system. This makes filter changes and inspections more convenient and reduces water disruption.
