Why Katalox for iron and manganese
Katalox media carries a manganese-dioxide-style catalytic surface that is especially effective at oxidizing and trapping iron and manganese, the two metals most responsible for orange and black staining on fixtures and laundry. In an air-injection system it works with the oxygen pocket held above the bed, so it does the job without any chemical feed to mix or monitor.

The bed is renewed on each backwash, which lifts and rinses away the accumulated oxidized metals, so day-to-day upkeep is minimal.
