How the two stages work together
Water hits Stage 1 first — the iron filter removes the iron that city water can still carry, ahead of softening. It then flows into Stage 2, where the water softener removes the calcium & magnesium hardness that scales pipes, water heaters and fixtures. Treating in this order is what keeps the softening resin clean and the whole system low-maintenance.
