Mineral tanks and air-injection filters are identified by their physical dimensions — a 10x54 tank is ten inches in diameter and fifty-four inches tall — rather than by a conventional model number. Those dimensions determine the media volume, the distributor length and the valve thread, so they are the figures to have to hand before ordering.

Air-injection (AIO) filters add a second variable: the media inside. The tank and valve on an iron filter and a sulphur filter can be identical while the media is entirely different, and the media is what determines what the system actually removes. Ordering a replacement on tank size alone is the most common mistake made with these systems.

Ordering notes for tanks and media

Order tanks by diameter and height, and order media by what you are treating rather than by the tank it goes into. Because of the weight of media and vessels, shipping is a real cost on this category; it is included in the price shown for United States delivery.

Media is what does the work

It is worth repeating that on an air-injection filter the tank and valve are close to interchangeable between applications while the media is not. An iron filter and a sulphur filter can be built on identical hardware and differ only in what is loaded inside. When replacing media, confirm what the system was originally commissioned to remove rather than inferring it from the equipment, because the equipment will look the same either way.

Distributor tubes

The distributor inside the tank is cut to the tank height and is easy to overlook when ordering a replacement vessel. A tank supplied without one, or with one cut for a different height, will channel water past the media instead of through it.

Freeboard and how much media a tank takes

A tank is never filled to the top. The empty space above the media, called freeboard, is what allows the bed to lift and separate during backwash, and without it the backwash simply pushes media out to drain. As a rough guide the bed occupies the lower two-thirds of the vessel, which is why a taller tank of the same diameter holds proportionally more media than its height alone suggests.

This is also why media is ordered in cubic feet while tanks are ordered in inches. The two are related but not interchangeable, and a tank swap that keeps the same diameter but changes the height will change the media volume required. If you are replacing a vessel like for like, the safest approach is to order the same media quantity that came out rather than recalculating from the dimensions.

Gravel underbedding

Larger vessels are commissioned with a layer of support gravel beneath the media, which spreads flow across the base of the bed and stops fine media migrating into the distributor screen. It is not present in every system, but where it was used originally it should be replaced when the media is changed.
