Water Softener Salt Usage Calculator
Estimate your monthly salt use and cost based on your household and water hardness.
Use less salt
Demand-initiated (metered) valves like the Fleck 5600SXT only regenerate when needed, cutting salt and water versus old timer systems. Correct sizing matters too — see our Sizing Calculator.
Frequently asked questions
How much salt does a water softener use per month?
A typical family uses roughly 40–80 lb (one to two 40-lb bags) per month, depending on water hardness and usage. Harder water and iron increase salt use.
Why is my softener using so much salt?
Common causes: a timer (non-metered) valve regenerating too often, an oversized salt dose setting, or very hard/high-iron water. A metered valve and correct settings cut salt use.
Does iron increase salt usage?
Yes — each 1 ppm of iron adds about 4 gpg of load, so the softener regenerates more often and uses more salt. High iron is better handled by a dedicated iron filter.
