Indianapolis: among the hardest big-city water in America

There's no soft-pedaling this one. Central Indiana sits on limestone bedrock, and limestone is the classic hard-water culprit — groundwater trickling through it dissolves calcium carbonate and carries it straight to your tap. Indianapolis water regularly measures 12 to 20 grains per gallon (well over 250 ppm), placing it in the conversation for the hardest water of any major U.S. city. Fort Wayne and a few northern areas run somewhat softer, but across most of the state hardness is a fact of life.

Very hard water is hard on heaters

Here's the mechanism. When your heater warms Indiana's mineral-loaded water, calcium and magnesium fall out of solution and cement themselves onto the hottest surfaces — the tank bottom, the heating elements, or the coils of a tankless exchanger. At 12-20 gpg this happens fast.

  • Roughly a quarter-inch of scale on the heat source translates to a 25-40% efficiency loss. You pay for heat that never reaches the water.
  • Tankless owners in the Indianapolis metro often find their units need descaling well ahead of schedule; the tighter the passage, the faster very-hard water fouls it.
  • Conventional tanks accumulate a stubborn sediment bed that insulates the burner and can cut years off the appliance's life.

Because Indiana's hardness sits at the very-hard end, the urgency is real. This is a state where untreated water heaters visibly underperform within a few short years.

City water, well water, and iron

Indianapolis and other municipal systems are hard but consistent. Step outside city limits onto a private well and the hardness can climb further — and Indiana groundwater frequently carries iron too, which stains fixtures and laundry. Test your well for hardness and iron before you buy any treatment. A scale conditioner is designed to help prevent new scale; it does not remove iron.

To be upfront about what this is: a salt-free scale conditioner, not a softener. It won't pull hardness out of your Indiana water or dissolve deposits already sitting in your tank. It helps stop fresh scale from bonding to hot metal so your heater stays efficient longer.
