Michigan: among the most-tested PFAS states in the country

Michigan is a leader in PFAS - both in contamination and, just as importantly, in the aggressive testing that revealed it. The state reports more mapped PFAS locations than any other, a distinction driven largely by how hard it has chosen to look. Two cases stand out. The Wolverine Worldwide tannery and its dumpsites - including the notorious House Street disposal area near Rockford and Belmont in Kent County - contaminated residential wells across Plainfield and Algoma Townships; a $69.5 million Wolverine settlement funds municipal water lines for the affected homes. Separately, the city of Parchment in Kalamazoo County confronted serious municipal-system contamination that forced an emergency switch to an alternate supply.

These findings come from the state's own PFAS Response effort (EGLE), the EPA, and coverage by outlets such as WZZM, with EWG mapping placing Michigan at the top nationally. It is worth stressing why Michigan tops the map: the state decided to test aggressively, so many of its listed sites reflect diligence rather than uniquely worse pollution. For residents that is genuinely good news - more testing means more homeowners get real answers instead of guessing about their wells. The state's willingness to publish site-level data has also made Michigan a national model, and its EGLE PFAS Response team maintains an interactive map that residents can search by community - a resource most states simply do not offer at the same depth. The Wolverine case in particular reshaped how Michigan thinks about legacy contamination: leather-tanning waste containing Scotchgard-era chemistry had been disposed of at unlined sites for decades before anyone tested the surrounding wells, and the eventual settlement funding municipal water lines set a precedent other affected communities now point to. For a homeowner, the takeaway is that even a quiet residential township can sit atop a documented plume, which is exactly why a well test near a known site is not optional.

Some of the strictest limits in the nation

Michigan did not wait for Washington. It set its own MCLs that reach well beyond the federal floor, covering more compounds at specific state values: PFOA at 8 ppt, PFOS at 16 ppt, PFNA at 6 ppt, PFHxS at 51 ppt, GenX (HFPO-DA) at 370 ppt, PFBS at 420 ppt, and PFHxA at 400,000 ppt, per EGLE and BCLP. Layered on top, the 2024 federal EPA rule adds hard caps of 4 ppt for PFOA and PFOS and 10 ppt for PFNA, PFHxS and GenX - so a Michigander is protected by whichever standard is tighter for any given chemical.

Removal that stands up to Michigan's data

With so much testing behind it, Michigan is a good place to point out that PFAS treatment is well proven at the household scale. Granular activated carbon (GAC) pulls PFAS onto its carbon surface and forms the backbone of whole-house treatment on an affected Kent or Kalamazoo County well. Anion-exchange resin trades PFAS ions off the water in a compact bed and is especially effective on the long-chain compounds common to the Wolverine plume. Reverse osmosis (RO) forces water through a membrane barrier that yields a strong point-of-use drinking safeguard. Many affected homes combine a whole-house point-of-entry unit for bathing and cooking with an under-sink RO for drinking water.
