Pura 10 GPM UV Water Sterilization System with sediment and carbon stages

Microbial Safety

UV targets bacteria, viruses, and cysts—without chemicals—so your water remains safe and natural.

  • UV lamp neutralizes microbes on contact
  • No chemical residuals
  • Pairs with carbon for taste/odor

Taste & Odor

Sediment + carbon stages reduce grit, chlorine taste, and organic odors—better showers, laundry, and cooking water.

Whole-House Filters

Well-Water Friendly

UV disinfection is a go-to for private wells. Add dedicated iron treatment if staining is present, and RO at the sink for premium drinking water.

Add RO at the Sink

Key Features

  • Triple stage: sediment prefilter + carbon block + ultraviolet chamber
  • High-flow design (listed as ~10 GPM) for whole-home service
  • Chemical-free disinfection; eco-friendly approach
  • Standard U.S. plumbing ports (product page notes ¾")
  • Residential + light commercial suitability

For current specifications and parts list, see the product page: UV Water Sterilization Water Purification System.

How It Works

1) Sediment Prefilter

Traps sand, silt, and rust so downstream media don’t clog and household flow stays steady.

2) Carbon Block

Improves taste and odor by reducing chlorine and organics. Sets you up for great shower and cooking water.

3) UV Sterilization

UV light neutralizes microbes as water passes—no chemicals added, no taste change.

Hard water? Combine with a softener to stop scale. Filters manage taste/odor; softeners handle hardness. See Softeners

Sizing & Flow (No Pressure Drops)

Match filter/UV sizing to your plumbing and peak household demand:

Home Plumbing Target Flow Approach
1–2 baths, 2–4 people ¾″ ~7–10 gpm Sediment + carbon + UV
3–4 baths, 4–6 people 1″ ~10–15 gpm Higher-flow staging; consider RO at sink
5+ baths / luxury fixtures 1″+ 15–20+ gpm High-capacity media, staged prefilters; add RO

Confirm current flow rating and port size on the product page: UV Water Sterilization.

Installation & Maintenance

Installation Overview

  • Mount vertically in a dry, accessible location
  • Observe inlet/outlet flow direction
  • Plumb prefilter → carbon → UV
  • Power UV chamber (115V per listing)

See step-by-step guidance on the product page: UV Water Sterilization – Installation.

Maintenance Schedule

  • Sediment cartridge: replace ~3–6 months (or when pressure drops)
  • Carbon cartridge: replace ~6–12 months (usage dependent)
  • UV lamp: replace per lamp life (typically ~12 months)
  • Sanitize and leak-check during changes

FAQs

Will UV change the taste of my water?

No—UV is chemical-free. Taste improvements come from the carbon stage which reduces chlorine/organics.

Do I still need RO if I have UV?

UV handles microbes. If you want low-TDS, bottled-quality drinking water, add RO at the sink.

What about hard water spots?

That’s hardness. Add a softener to prevent scale. Filters + UV address taste/odor + microbes.

Is this safe for private wells?

Yes—UV is widely used on wells. If you see staining or sulfur odor, add appropriate pre-treatment (iron/sulfur) before UV.

The complete guide to UV water treatment

Ultraviolet (UV) disinfection is the most reliable chemical-free way to kill living organisms in your water. If your supply can carry bacteria — almost any private well, and city water after a boil-water notice or main break — a whole-house UV water treatment system is the layer that carbon filters and softeners simply cannot provide.

What a UV water treatment system does — and what it doesn’t

A UV system inactivates microorganisms by exposing water to 254 nm ultraviolet-C light as it flows past a lamp. It does not remove sediment, chlorine, iron, hardness, metals or dissolved chemicals — it targets biology, not chemistry. That is why UV is almost always the final stage after filtration: it delivers microbiologically safe water without adding a single chemical, changing taste, or creating wastewater.

What UV kills: bacteria, viruses, coliform & cysts

At the right dose, UV inactivates 99.99% of the pathogens that make water unsafe — including E. coli, total coliform, Salmonella, Cryptosporidium and Giardia cysts, and waterborne viruses. It works by scrambling the DNA of each organism so it can no longer reproduce or infect. Unlike chlorine, UV handles chlorine-resistant cysts, and it does so in seconds of contact time.

How a UV system works: lamp, quartz sleeve & dose

Water enters a stainless-steel reactor chamber and flows around a quartz sleeve that houses the UV-C lamp. The sleeve keeps the lamp dry while letting the light pass into the water. Effectiveness is measured as dose (mJ/cm²) — a function of lamp intensity and how long the water is exposed. The slower the flow, the higher the dose, which is why correct sizing matters.

Sizing UV by flow rate (GPM)

UV is sized to your peak flow rate, not your daily use. A typical family home peaks around 8–12 gallons per minute with multiple fixtures running. Choose a system rated at or above that peak so every drop still receives a full germicidal dose during the busiest moment of the day. Undersizing is the most common mistake. Browse rated options in our UV water sterilizers collection, from the compact VIQUA 3 gpm system up to whole-house units.

Well water vs. city water: who needs UV

Private well water is unregulated and can test positive for coliform after heavy rain, flooding or a failing septic system — UV is the standard of care. On city water, UV is valuable insurance against boil-water advisories, aging distribution mains and cross-connection events, and it is common for immune-compromised households who want a final barrier at the point of entry.

Pre-treatment: UV needs clear water

UV only works if light can reach the organisms. Suspended sediment, iron, manganese, tannins or hardness shadow pathogens and block the dose, so treat those first. Most installs put a sediment and carbon stage ahead of the lamp; well water with iron or rotten-egg odor should also address sulfur and iron before UV. If you are building a full well water treatment train, UV is the last box in the line.

Commercial & agricultural UV

The same physics scales up. Hospitals and clinics use UV for infection control; hotels and restaurants protect guests and ice/beverage lines; dairy farms and breweries rely on UV for wash-down and process water. For high-flow multi-lamp systems sized to a facility peak demand, see our commercial & industrial water treatment page and request a quote sized to your GPM.

Maintenance: simple and predictable

UV is low-maintenance but not no-maintenance. Replace the UV-C lamp once a year — it still glows after 12 months but its germicidal output has faded below spec. Wipe or replace the quartz sleeve when it clouds, since scale on the sleeve blocks the dose. That is the entire routine: one lamp a year, an occasional sleeve.

UV water treatment FAQ

Does UV remove chlorine or hardness? No — UV only disinfects. Pair it with carbon for chlorine and a softener for hardness.

Is UV-treated water safe to drink immediately? Yes. There is no contact tank or chemical residual to wait on; water is safe the moment it leaves the chamber.

How much does UV cost to run? Roughly the same as a household light bulb — the lamp runs continuously, using only a few dollars of electricity per month.

What happens in a power outage? The lamp is off, so treat water as untreated until power returns; many well owners add a simple alarm or solenoid for this.
