If you want the cleanest drinking water your kitchen tap can deliver, a reverse osmosis (RO) system is hard to beat. A good RO setup removes up to roughly 95–99% of dissolved solids — including lead, PFAS “forever chemicals,” nitrates, arsenic, fluoride, chlorine byproducts, and general TDS (total dissolved solids). The result is bottled-quality water straight from a dedicated faucet, without the plastic bottles.

Most RO systems install quietly under your kitchen sink and feed a small dedicated faucet next to your main tap (some also plumb to the refrigerator and ice maker). This guide walks through how RO actually works, how to choose the right system for your household, what maintenance really costs, and why pairing RO with a whole-home water softener protects your investment.

How Does Reverse Osmosis Work?

Reverse osmosis pushes your water through a series of filters, ending with a semi-permeable membrane so fine that it blocks dissolved contaminants at the molecular level. Water passes through in stages, each doing a specific job:

  1. Sediment pre-filter — traps rust, sand, silt, and dirt so the finer filters downstream don’t clog prematurely.
  2. Carbon pre-filter — adsorbs chlorine, chloramines, and organic chemicals. This step is critical because chlorine can damage the RO membrane, so the carbon protects it.
  3. RO membrane — the heart of the system. This is where dissolved solids like lead, arsenic, nitrates, fluoride, PFAS, and TDS are rejected and flushed to the drain, while clean water passes through.
  4. Post carbon (polishing) filter — a final pass that removes any lingering tastes or odors right before the water reaches your faucet.
  5. Optional alkaline / remineralization stage — adds beneficial minerals like calcium and magnesium back in, raising pH and improving taste.

Because the membrane rejects contaminants rather than trapping them, RO uses a small amount of water to rinse those solids down the drain — more on that wastewater ratio below.

4-Stage vs. 5-Stage vs. 6-Stage: What the Numbers Mean

The “stage” count simply tells you how many filtration steps the water goes through. More stages isn’t automatically better — it depends on what those extra stages do.

  • 4-stage: sediment + carbon + membrane + post carbon. Solid, effective drinking water for most city-water homes.
  • 5-stage: adds a second carbon or sediment stage for longer filter life and better protection of the membrane. This is the most popular configuration and a great all-around choice.
  • 6-stage: typically adds an alkaline / remineralization cartridge on top of a 5-stage system.

Why remineralization matters (the honest version): RO is so effective that it strips out good minerals along with the bad ones. That’s perfectly safe to drink — but the water can taste flat and slightly acidic. A remineralization stage adds calcium and magnesium back in, which restores a crisp, balanced taste and nudges the pH toward neutral. If you love the taste of spring water, an alkaline stage is worth it. If you just want maximum purity, a standard 5-stage system is plenty.

Which RO System Is Right for You?

Use this quick selector to narrow things down:

  • Your TDS level: If your water has high dissolved solids (test strips or a TDS meter read 300+ ppm), prioritize a proven 5-stage system with a fresh membrane. Lower TDS gives you more flexibility.
  • Family size: A standard 50 GPD (gallons per day) system easily covers a household of 2–5 for drinking and cooking. Larger families or heavy water drinkers may want a higher-output membrane or a storage tank upgrade.
  • Want alkaline / mineral water? Choose a system with a remineralization stage (like an under-sink alkaline RO).
  • Counter and cabinet space: Under-sink systems need room in the cabinet for the filter housings and a small storage tank. Measure before you buy.
  • Well vs. city water: City water homes do great with standard RO. Well water often carries iron, sediment, or hardness that can foul the membrane fast — those homes should add pre-treatment (and usually a softener) upstream of the RO.

RO Maintenance: What It Really Costs

RO systems are low-effort, but they aren’t zero-effort. Filters wear out and need swapping on a predictable schedule:

  • Sediment & carbon pre/post filters: replace roughly every 6–12 months, depending on your water quality and usage. If you notice slower flow or a change in taste, it’s time.
  • RO membrane: the long-lived part — typically 2–3 years. Protecting it with fresh pre-filters (and soft water) is the single best way to extend its life.

Staying on schedule keeps performance high and protects the expensive membrane. We stock replacement filters and membranes for the systems we sell, so re-ordering is simple.

The honest bit about wastewater: RO produces a small amount of drain water while it rinses rejected contaminants away. Efficiency varies by system and water pressure, but modern RO units are far more efficient than older designs. For the payoff — removing lead, PFAS, and TDS from your drinking water — most households find the trade-off well worth it.

Pair RO With a Water Softener for Longer Membrane Life

Here’s a detail many buyers miss: hard water shortens the life of your RO membrane. The dissolved calcium and magnesium in hard water scale up and foul the membrane, so it clogs and loses rejection performance far sooner than it should.

Feeding your RO system with softened water dramatically reduces that scaling, so the membrane lasts longer and performs better between changes. If your home has hard water — and most of the US does — a whole-home water softener is the ideal partner for point-of-use RO. Softener protects the membrane; RO polishes your drinking water. Together they cover the whole house and the kitchen tap.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does reverse osmosis remove PFAS and lead?
Yes. The RO membrane is one of the most effective home methods for reducing PFAS “forever chemicals” and lead, along with arsenic, nitrates, and fluoride. It rejects these dissolved contaminants at the membrane level rather than just trapping them like a basic carbon filter.

Does an RO system waste water?
RO sends a small amount of water to the drain to rinse away the contaminants it removes. Modern systems are more efficient than older ones, and the amount is modest compared to the value of cleaner drinking water. Good pre-filtration and adequate water pressure help keep efficiency high.

Is RO water too pure or “mineral-stripped”?
RO removes minerals along with contaminants, which is completely safe to drink — we get the vast majority of our minerals from food, not water. If you prefer the taste and pH of mineral water, choose a system with an alkaline / remineralization stage that adds calcium and magnesium back in.

Do I need a water softener too?
If your home has hard water, yes — not because RO requires it, but because soft water protects the RO membrane from scaling and greatly extends its life. A softener also benefits your whole house, from appliances to skin and hair.

How often do I change RO filters?
Pre and post carbon/sediment filters roughly every 6–12 months; the RO membrane every 2–3 years. Water quality and household usage shift these intervals, so watch for slower flow or taste changes.
