West Virginia Runs Hard, and Some Wells Run Extreme
On municipal supply, West Virginia is a hard-water state, with cities like Charleston and Huntington measuring above 90 mg/L and supplies generally landing in the 4.7 to 10.5-plus grains-per-gallon range. But the number that really matters here is the one you find on rural coal-country wells, where hardness can climb to 18 to 25 grains per gallon, extremely hard, and often arrives with iron staining. In much of the state, the well water is a bigger story than the city tap.
Two Different Threats to Your Heater
At hard municipal levels, scale accumulates steadily: sediment settles across the bottom of a storage tank, and mineral plates onto tankless heat exchangers. At the extreme 18-25 gpg you can hit on some wells, that process runs fast, and iron compounds the mess with staining and additional deposits. Across the board the efficiency arithmetic holds, a quarter-inch of scale can strip 25 to 40 percent of a heater's efficiency, and at the high end of West Virginia's range that layer builds quickly.
City Tap Versus Coal-Country Well
- Charleston and Huntington: hard municipal water, above 90 mg/L
- Rural coal-country wells: 18-25 gpg, extremely hard, frequently with iron
If you are on one of those heavy wells, iron is not a side issue, it is central. Test for it specifically before choosing equipment, because iron demands its own treatment that a conditioner does not provide.
Straight Talk on Salt-Free Conditioners
These are conditioners, not softeners. They will not remove West Virginia's hardness minerals and they will not remove iron or fix iron staining. What a conditioner does is treat dissolved calcium so that less of it bonds as new scale on hot surfaces, protecting a heater you have descaled or just installed. On the state's iron-heavy wells, deal with the iron first, then use a conditioner to slow future scale.

Salt-free conditioners reduce and help prevent new water-heater scale; they are not softeners and do not remove existing hardness. Free U.S. shipping. See our hard water guide.
